Although there are many different types of project, two significant categories can be identified:
Development projects
Development projects serve the development of new products or services. For example, if a machine tool maker develops a new machine tool for a customer, this is a development project.
Change projects
Change projects, in contrast, deal with the changing of organisation structures, which is why they are often referred to as change management or structural projects. Here the focus is not upon the development of a new product but the development of a new form of co-operation between people within an organisation.
Project size
The size of a project can only be specified in the context of the organisation. That which is a major project in one organisation may be a minor one in another. See also the subject of project classification with regard to this.
